DIY Burn Serum Recipe

Natural Burn Relief Serum

There are few things more uncomfortable than a burn, whether from the sun or a mishap in the kitchen. Burned skin can cause discomfort when doing everyday activities, like bathing, dressing, and sleeping. But soothing a burn doesn’t have to be expensive, or involve an entire medicine cabinet worth of products. In fact, comforting your sensitive skin can be quite simple, if you know the right ingredients to reach for.

Fortunately for our readers, your Moody beauty guides have concocted the ultimate go-to burn relief serum recipe that you can use time and time again. Loaded with calming properties, this soothing serum will quickly become your best friend!

Simply apply to your burn to reduce redness, ease discomfort, and soothe your skin. You'll be amazed at how well this recipe works, and it’s not exclusively for burns either. It’s just as effective when applied to rosacea or psoriasis to help reduce redness, or those pesky bug bites to relieve itching and irritation.

Sun damage and your skin

Ask any dermatologist or esthetician, and they’ll tell you that the golden rule of skin care is sun protection. No matter your age, a strong SPF is a must-have in your skincare arsenal. But why is that the case? What’s so sinister about the sun that it’s treated like your skin’s #1 enemy?

Aside from causing unsightly lines and wrinkles, and the immediate threat of sunburn, overexposure to ultraviolet rays can damage your skin from deep within. Beneath the surface of sun-scorched skin, you’ll find burst blood vessels and contaminated cells. Over time with repeated sun damage, you’ll notice dryness, discoloration, and a noticeably leathery texture. As more of your cells are corrupted by the power of the sun’s rays, you run the risk of developing skin cancer. Though some skin cancers can be easily removed, others are more life threatening.

Burn Serum Base

To cook up your own natural burn relief serum at home, the first step is creating your desired base. You can opt for a gel base, an oil base, or if you’re strapped for time, you can even use a premade lotion or aloe gel you already have on hand. Keep reading for a straightforward solution to formulating the best base for your burn serum.

Making a gel base

Gel-based serums frequently contain aloe vera, known to alleviate pain and discomfort by providing a cooling sensation to your skin. An aloe gel is best used when a burn is fresh and still sweltering to the touch. Enriched with anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants, enzymes, and a handful of skin-loving vitamins, an aloe-based gel will deliver immediate relief. Down below we’ve detailed our favorite formula for a soothing gel base from which to develop your sunburn serum.

Combine the following ingredients:

  1. 1 tbsp. Aloe vera gel

  2. 1/4 tbsp. Rosehip seed oil

  3. 1/4 tbsp. Jojoba oil

  4. 1/2 tbsp. Sweet almond oil

  5. 1/4 tsp. Vitamin E oil

Using a simple oil base

Once your sunburn has had some time to cool down, you can switch from gel to an oil-based serum. Again, these are ingredients you’ll likely already have on hand, such as coconut, almond, or olive oil. Regardless of which you prefer, you’ll want to use about 2 tbsp. to start.

As soon as your base is mixed, it’s time to add in some essential oils to further the healing and soothing properties of your burn serum.

Gentle & soothing essential oil blend for burns

This combination of essential oils is guaranteed to ease irritation while simultaneously delivering a long-lasting, irresistible aroma.

  • 20 drops of lavender essential oil

  • 15 drops of oat extract

  • 10 drops of peppermint essential oil

  • 10 drops of juniper berry

  • 5 drops of geranium rose essential oil

Once you have your base, and you’ve blended your therapeutic oils, it’s time to combine the two. Be sure to mix vigorously until your base and oil blend are well combined. Then, apply freely to your body and face for instant therapeutic relief.

Please note that this Natural Burn Serum is not intended to replace a medical treatment of any kind. If you or someone you love is severely burned, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately. This burn serum is only intended for minor burns that don’t blister.

As soon as your pain and discomfort subside, you can switch from using your burn relief serum to moisturizing and soothing your body with our After Shower Lotion. This will quiet that inevitable itchiness that follows a burn and help moisturize to prevent peeling.

Enjoy!
