A Step-by-Step Guide to Applying Mascara
After your done applying your eye color and eyeliner, the next thing you’ll want to do is to apply your mascara as the finishing touch to your makeup look.
Step 1: Clean your Lashes
Make sure that your lashes are clean and no coated with eye shadow. If you have residual eye shadow or lotion on them the mascara will not stick to your lashes as well. You can also take a clean spooly and brush out your lashes to make sure they are clean, but it will also help to separate lashes, preparing them for the mascara.
Step 2: Curl Your Lashes
If you want bigger, longer looking lashes you won’t want to miss this step. Before applying the mascara, use an eyelash curler to lengthen and lift lashes. This will allow your mascara to adhere better to your eyelashes and make them look longer — without needing extra product.
Step 3: Apply Mascara
To make sure you get just the right amount of product, twist the wand out of the tube, and remove the excess on the tube's edge. This will help you prevent getting too much product for your lashes or getting those pesky clumps.
To apply your mascara, open your mouth (this is essential to flawless mascara application), look slightly up, place the wand at the lower part of your upper eye lashes, then glide the wand up to the ends of your lashes — wiggling back and forth as you go up slowly. Keep moving along the base of your lashes until all the lashes are coated. Always start at the base and slowly move towards the ends of your lashes. Apply to both the top and bottom lashes.
Step 4: Coat All Your Lashes (upper and lower)
To make sure you have completely covered all the parts of the eyelash and have reached the outer and inner part of your eye then vertically angle your wand and gently brush up against them. This will help ensure an even application.
Step 5: Clean Up Any Mistakes
Mascara can be a little bit messy, regardless of experience, and sometimes you’ll get too close and leave smudges or marks. It happens to the best of us! Luckily, it's very easy to fix. Start with a q-tip that has a dab of makeup remover (you can also dip a qtip in oil for an inexpensive and natural way to remove makeup) and gently dab and swipe away clumps or smudges.
Now that you know the basics, we've got a few tips and hacks to create full, bold and longer eyelashes.
11 Lessons for Applying Mascara to Get Fuller, Bolder and Longer Lashes
#1: Wiggling is Essential
For the most flawless application of mascara you’ll want to wiggle your wand back and forth as you move the wand up your lashes. This will provide full coverage of each lash, giving you a thicker base and bolder looking lashes.
#2: Use it as Eyeliner
Are you out of eyeliner? Traveling and forgot yours? No problem. Let your mascara take care of it! Take a fine pointed brush (we use the stiff angled side on the Moody Sisters Multi Task Brush) and use it like a liquid liner. Dab your clean brush into the bottle or take product from the wand. Pull your eyelid slightly to create a smooth working surface and gently drag it along the upper lash line, moving from the outer corner to the inside corner of your eye.
#3: Coat Both Sides of Your Lashes
Are you wanting bigger, bolder or thicker lashes? Cover your lashes on both sides! After applying mascara underneath your lashes, slowly use the brush swipe the upper part of your lashes from roots to tips. Allow a few minutes in between each coat.
#4: Use Setting Powder
Yes, a translucent setting powder is a good shine stopper for your face, but it can also make lashes appear full and thick. After the first coat of mascara, brush a little powder onto the edges of lashes, and then add another coat to complete it. It will provide a heavier and thicker coat to give you bigger and bolder lashes.
#5: Hold the Wand Vertically to Coat the Tiny Bottom Lashes
Sometimes those small little hairs can be really hard to coat in mascara, especially without getting mascara all over your under eye area. Turn and hold the wand upright so it’s straight up and down, gently press it into the lower lashes and wiggle left to right.
#6: Let Smudges Dry Before Wiping Away with a Q-tip
It’s easier to remove a dry clump or smudge of mascara after it’s dry. Then grab a Q-tip that has some makeup remover or olive oil on the tip and wipe up mistakes, picking up every smudge of makeup.
#7: Never Pump Your Mascara Tube
Avoid pumping the mascara wand in and out of the case—this old method pumps air into the tube reducing it’s shelf life and drying out your formula faster.
#8 You Can Build Your Coverage
Are you wanting darker, bolder lashes? Apply more than one coat of mascara until you get the look you want and the thickness you like. Make sure you don’t let each coat fully dry before adding more as applying fresh layers over dry mascara can do damage to the lashes.
#9 Use Brown Mascara for a More Natural Look
You want your eye lashes to be a part of your overall look, not stand out like spider legs on your face. Use a brown mascara shade when you have light blonde eye lashes or want a more natural look. Using a brown mascara will give you a boost in length and boldness, without screaming “I HAVE EYE LASHES”!
#10 Use the Mascara Wand Tip to Prevent Clumping
The most common area you’ll find mascara clumps in the base of your lashes. This happens when you’ve applied too much product. To prevent this, use the tip of the mascara wand and apply your mascara, wiggling the bristles back and forth for an even coat.
#11 Apply Mascara Heavier on the Outside of Your Eye
To naturally lift and open your eyes make sure you’re applying your mascara heavier on the outside lashes of your eye. This will make them look longer and bolder and give you an instant lift and boost.
#12 Use Paper to Protect your Eye Shadow
If you’re struggling with applying your mascara to your JUST your lashes and have a tendency to smudge it on your eye lids, then this trick is for you. Gently, place a piece of paper in between your lashes and your eyelid while you apply your mascara. This will keep your eye shadow flawless and your eyelids smudge-free.
