Everything You Need to Know About Body Exfoliating
How Often Should You Exfoliate?
One of the key steps to achieving healthy, vibrant skin is exfoliating. What does exfoliating entail exactly? It involves sloughing off dead skin cells with a sort of granular substance that’s mixed in with a facial or body cleanser. Exfoliants help to brighten and revive your skin, as well as to unclog pores. Because exfoliating can cause your skin to shed or peel, ultimately a new layer of delicate skin is revealed, like a fresh canvas to work with. But also due to this reason, exfoliating isn’t something that’s recommended you do daily.
So how often should you exfoliate, and what’s the best method for maximizing results? Moody Sisters has got the low-down for you! Continue reading for the insider scoop on everything you need to know about exfoliating.
Why exfoliating is important
Exfoliating offers a wealth of benefits to your skin, including removing dirt and oil buildup, smoothing and evening skin tone, and increasing luminosity. While our skin does this naturally through a process known as desquamation, those with oily skin may notice that this process is severely slowed. This causes a buildup in bacteria that may result in acne breakouts, dulled skin, or in worse cases, infection.
This is where exfoliating comes in handy. It’s basically a way to speed up this process, slough off dead skin cells, and breathe new life into your skin. If you suffer from acne scarring, marks, or discoloration, exfoliating also works to reduce their appearance. Used for a prolonged period, exfoliants can actually rid your skin of these concerns.

How often to exfoliate
As we’ve mentioned, exfoliating can be harsh on the skin when done too frequently. That’s why you should ideally exfoliate two to three times a week at most. Although, women with overly oily skin may need to exfoliate more often. If you notice your skin looking a bit dull and lifeless, it’s probably safe to say that you’re due for a deep exfoliation.
Your skin type will help you determine what sort of exfoliant would work best, though you can’t go wrong with Moody Sister’s Body Scrubs. Your skin will instantly feel smoother and softer, and the hydration lasts long after you rinse off.
How to exfoliate properly
Before jumping straight into the shower, consider dry brushing your body first. This will remove the surface layer of dead skin, and help to kick-start your exfoliation routine. You can dry brush your entire body from top to bottom in gentle circles.
Once you’re in the shower, apply your favorite Body Scrub and massage it into your skin in a circular motion. Pay a little extra attention to areas that are prone to more dryness, such as your knees, elbows, and heels. Avoid using a loofah or other rough applicator, as the exfoliant should be sufficient, and you don’t want to scrub your skin raw. Despite being a bit hard to reach, try to scrub your back as best you can, as this is an area we often neglect.
After you’ve rinsed your body thoroughly, step out of the shower to dry off, but leave a bit of moisture on your skin for the next step.
Moisturize after exfoliating
This last step is arguably the most important, so don’t overlook it! Moisturizing after exfoliating locks in hydration, and ensures your skin is soft and smooth to the touch. We recommend our After Shower Lotion, which is all-natural and formulated for all skin types. Crafted with coconut oil, this body lotion is packed full of hydrating ingredients for ultra-rich moisture that lasts all day long.
